WWII Bunkers of Spenceville

Friday, January 28th - At the start of World War II, the US Army acquired a huge section of land we now know as Beale Air Force Base and the Spenceville Wildlife Preserve. The Spenceville area was used for aerial and ground assault combat training. There are numerous structures that are tucked away and off the beaten track in this popular wildlife preserve - wartime remnants and history from 65 years ago. This 4.5 mile trek will visit 10 military bunkers, the "Cabbage Patch" cemetary and the strange structure known as the "Dragon's Teeth."

Snowshoeing with Cathy Canderson-Meyers

Sunday, February 26th - When was the last time you did something for the first time? If you've never been snowshoeing before (or even if you have but you'd like a refresher with an expert), this is the trek for you! Cathy Anderson-Meyers has been leading snowshoeing outings for over a decade and is now REI's Outdoor School Snowshoeing instructor. You will learn basic snowshoeing as well as get tips on how to deal with different kinds of snow and terrain. Cathy supplies all of the equipment you'll need. Cost:  $50 (includes snowshoes and poles). Sorry, no passes and no discounts for having your own equipment.

Full Moon Walk in Spenceville

Wednesday, March 7th - We had so much fun doing the "moonwalk" last fall that we're going out again! Due to the timing of sunset and moonrise, we won't be able to do this again until the end of summer. Join us for a full moon stroll through the open meadows and oak woodlands of the Spenceville Wildlife Area - sans lights. If we're lucky, we might hear the call of the Western Screech Owl.... Cost: $12 for BYLT Members, $17 for Not-yet Members

Sutter Buttes Trek

Saturday, April 21st - The Sutter Buttes were created by volcanic activity about 1.4 million years ago. Revered by the indigenous peoples of the area, the Buttes figure prominently in many of their creation stories. Public access to the Sutter Buttes is limited as all of the land is privately held by ranchers and farmers. The Middle Mountain Foundation works with the owners to preserve the Buttes with land conservation initiatives and by leading naturalist hikes on the private properties. Join the Land Trust as we partner with the Middle Mountain Foundation for a day of discovery exploring "the smallest mountain range in the world." Cost:  $55. Sorry, no passes.

Wilderness First Aid Training with Bobbie Foster

Weekend of June 23-24th - Wilderness First Aid knowledge is different from basic First Aid: when you are out in the wilderness there may be no available help for an accident victim except for you - no fire department on the way nor ambulance rushing towards your location. If you spend time in the wilderness, having WFA training could save someone's life. Bobbie Foster of Foster Calm will train us in how to assess an accident victim's situation, what steps to take to protect yourself and assist the person in need, what to do in a variety of situations, what to have in your first aid tool box, and much much more. This is an interactive training and you will leave with the knowledge to make you a better, and safer, wilderness partner. Bobbie is offering a substantially discounted price for this workshop. Cost: $100 per person for the weekend. Sorry, no passes.
